Mental Health Nursing in Ireland
Professional Connections (Profco) has been contracted by the Health Care Executive (HSE) to assist them to recruit Mental Health Nurses for posts in Dublin.
We have posts in acute, elderly, forensic, and community for registered nurses.
We also recuit for some private sector organisations and have both registered nurse and senior nursing posts.
Registration with The Irish Nursing Board
In order to work as a Mental Health Nurse in Ireland you must be eligible to register on the Mental Health Register with The Irish Nursing Board- An Bord Altranais (ABA)
The cost to process your Registration ins 175 Euros. You will be responsible for this payment.
To register you will need to have at least a three year Education programme if you are mental Health trained only and if you are a general trained nurse with a post graduate certificate in Mental Health Nursing your course should be at least one year duration or 160 credits or in the region of 1200 hours.
Direct Entry Mental Health Nurses require at least 4600hrs in training. Of this total the minimum theory requirement is 1533hrs and minimum clinical requirement 2300hrs.
If you do not meet these requirements you will possibly require a period of adaptation for six weeks which can be facilitated. If your training does not meet the above requirements and you have some post graduate experience this will be taken into consideration. All applications are individually assessed by The Irish nursing board.

Interviews are held regularly in Ireland and the UK.

The contract of employment is issued when the following have been finalised
- Successful interview
- Satisfactory referencesSatisfactory Medical Screening
- Full Registration with An Bord Altranais ( Irish Nursing Board) in the appropiate division of the register
- Satisfactory Security Clearances
- Green Card/ Visa ( where necessary)

Dependant on the logistics of the above the expected commencement date from Interview is three to six months.
Immigration
Non EU nurses require a Green Card and Visa. The Green card can only be applied for once you are registered with the Irish Nursing Board. It will take3-4 weeks to obtain a Green Card. The cost of EURO 1000 will be paid by the Employer.
Once you receive your Green Card you then need to have your passport stamped with a visa Some nationalities do not require visas. To determine if you will need a visa after your Green Card is issues see http://www.dfa.ie/home/index.aspx?id=8777
Visas may be issued by your local Irish Embassy in your country of residence. If you are in another country it is usually possible to post or courier your visa application to the appropriate Embassy. For example for Zimbabwean UK Trained RMN's who no longer have a visa for the UK but are still in the UK, the Irish Embassy for Zimbabweans is in Pretoria in South Africa and you can courier you passport direct to the Embassy to have your visa stamped.
