Registration
Most midwives are employed in maternity hospitals or maternity units attached to general hospitals. However, midwives may also practise independently in the community. Registration as a midwife is required to practise as a Midwife in Ireland.
Registration is granted on application to The Irish Nursing Board

The Irish Register of Nurses has seven divisions, these are:
- Registered General Nurse
- Registered Psychiatric Nurse
- Registered Sick Children's Nurse
- Registered Mental Handicap Nurse
- Registered Midwife
- Registered Public Health Nurse
- Registered Nurse Tutor
